I know this song is about the night of the 21st, but for the purposes of getting the title of this newsletter off, we’re just gonna ignore that part today.
What We’re Up To
Hey y’all. Hope all is well on your side of the inbox. Since our last newsletter, we dropped an episode where we discussed the brief but amazing career of one of our favorite singers, Amy Winehouse.
We typically like to bring attention to those who are still with us, but every now and then we like to share what we loved about those who have passed on. This was a really fun episode to prep for, because it gave us a chance to revisit Amy’s two albums and to watch some old performances that we had forgotten about. Check out what we had to say👇🏾
So, we’ll be taking the rest of September off so we can enjoy the little bit of summer that we have left, but in the meantime we’ll still be sharing content here and on social media until we return in October.
Also, Miguel will be speaking on the Ignite Your Voice panel at this years Afros & Audio Podcast Festival, October 18-20 in Baltimore, MD. It’s gonna be a fun experience, so if you’re interested in attending, you can click the photo below to purchase tickets, and use the promo code mw24afau for 10% off.👇🏾 See you there!
What We’re Watching
Parallel on Paramount+
So, Christina found this one randomly on Paramount+ one night while looking for something for us to watch, and I don’t know how this slipped through the cracks, but it’s brilliant. It stars Danielle Deadwyler, Aldis Hodge and his brother Edwin Hodge, and it’s a remake of the 2019 Chinese film Parallel Forest.
I usually add trailers to this section, but it’s best that you go into it blind, and don’t read anything about it other than the synopsis.
Parallel follows the story of Vanessa (Danielle Deadwyler) who takes refuge at her family's lake house to grieve after suffering the loss of her child. Accompanied by her husband, Alex (Aldis Hodge), and his brother, Martel (Edwin Hodge), Vanessa attempts to regain her sense of normalcy after the tragedy. But soon after their arrival, she experiences an aberration when she is attacked by a parallel universe's version of herself. Faced with the reality that multiverses exist, she must reconcile the fact that these parallel gates will either hold the key to releasing her grief or trapping her forever.
I can’t say anything more than that, because that would spoil it, but take the time to check it out. You’re definitely gonna have to watch it a second time, just to try and spot all of the little things that will be missed on the first viewing.
Watch Parallel here.

What We’re Listening To
The FORCE by LL Cool J
Piggybacking off of last month’s selection, we have another hip hop vet dropping quality music in 2024. LL Cool J’s latest will be dropping on Friday, and it’s produced entirely by Q-Tip. The songs that have dropped so far, “Saturday Night Special” (ft. Fat Joe & Rick Ross), “Passion”, “Proclivities” (ft. Saweetie) and “Murdergram Deux” (ft. Eminem) have all been dope, so I’m excited to hear the rest later in the week. Like I said last month, I’m all in on this adult contemporary hip hop that we’ve been getting as of late.

The selection for this month hasn’t started yet, but the trailer is available right now. The first episode comes out on Thursday, to coincide with the start of the NFL season. BTW, you can pretty much sign me up for anything that Marshawn is involved in.
Marshawn Lynch, the former NFL star running back affectionately known as “Beast Mode” is joined by his former teammate and current NFL Network host Mike Robinson for Da Get Got Pod, his new weekly video podcast with Playmaker HQ. Da Get Got Pod will dive deep into Marshawn’s thoughts on current events in sports and pop culture with a guest list including some of the brightest stars in sports and entertainment. “Beast Mode’s” new show will publish new episodes every Thursday on Youtube and audio platforms, plus highlights on social media @getgotpod.
