I love this video.
What We’re Up To
Hey y’all.
We’re just wrapping up some other non-podcast projects right now, but we’ll be back with new episodes soon, as well as doing a couple of episodes of The Vault: Classic Music Reviews, who we profiled in a previous newsletter. So go ahead and subscribe to The Vault if you’re not already a listener. In the meantime, check out this episode that we did last year with B. Cox.
What We’re Watching
The Greatest Night in Pop on Netflix
Like most Gen X-ers, I’ve been obsessed with this song since I was 9 years old. Not because it’s a great song, but after seeing the video, I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that pretty much every famous person I knew at that point were all in the same room, together, and the video was just them making the song. No storyline, no dance sequences. Just the recording process. Soon after, I remember seeing a People magazine at my grandmother’s house that had some behind the scenes photos from that night, and I was floored again when I saw pics of Michael Jackson drinking a beer.
“MICHAEL JACKSON DRINKS BEER!” is what I telling everybody at school the next day. Nobody believed me.
A few years ago, I saw this video, and I’ve been all-in on the “We Are The World” footage ever since. Seeing Michael’s reaction’s to the trio of Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper and Kim Carnes trying to get their solos down cracks me up every time I watch it. I’ve been hoping that someday, someone would unearth more video. It took 40 years, but we’re finally here, baby. This documentary is for all of us 70’s and 80’s kids out there.
Check it out on Netflix.

What We’re Listening To
Until We Meet Again by Sy Smith
Until last week, I only knew Sy Smith by name, but there was a lot of chatter on the bird X about the release of this album. Nothing but glowing comments from some respected sources, so I decided to give this album a run, and I was not disappointed. It’s one of those records were the artist doesn’t try to do too many things at once, creating a disjointed project. Sy and producers Zo! and Tall Black Guy find a pocket and stay there. This is sonically pleasing.
After listening to this, I’m definitely going back to check out the rest of her catalog.

You Down Wit’ O.P.P.? (Other Peoples Podcasts)
Victory Light by The Kid Mero
If you’re looking to fill the hole left in your heart after the demise of the Bodega Boys podcast, this should be right up your alley. The Kid Mero has hooked up with former Desus and Mero crew member, Rainey Ovalle and the self-proclaimed “Super Bitch of NY” Lizbel Ortiz on this new venture. It has some of the elements of the old show, with some new touches added. It’s a little shaky in the beginning, but after a couple of months they seem to have found their footing and have a good balance.
