People throw the term “G.O.A.T.” around very loosely, but Quincy Jones was someone who this actually applies to. He was someone who touched ALL of our lives in one way or another, whether we realize it or not. RIP.
What We’re Up To
Hey y’all.
I know we’re a couple days late with this months newsletter, but we’ve been on the road for the past couple of weeks, coast to coast, L.A. to Chicago…more like D.C. to Vancouver, actually.
As most of you know, we attended the Afros & Audio podcast festival a couple of weeks ago in Baltimore, and it was one of the best experiences ever. We got a chance to meet folks in person that we’ve only connected with on social media, and made a lot of connections with peeps that we weren’t aware of prior to the conference.
There was none of the usual conference pretentiousness. Everyone who came through, both speakers and attendees, were very genuine in wanting to see everyone who attended, succeed. It was more like going to a family reunion or homecoming than a conference. If you’re able, you should definitely attend next year.
On another random note, we were at the airport in Vancouver a couple of days ago, and walked past a wine bar that was playing “Dance Floor” by Zapp. Let that sink in. A wine bar. In an airport. In Vancouver. Zapp. If you told me that a song that sampled Zapp was playing, I wouldn’t be shocked, but someone controlling the Sonos at Vino Volo went straight to the source.
And that’s kinda what we got into on our latest episode. We discussed how hip hop and R&B has become so ingrained in our lives, that it has become the default genre in a lot of cases. It’s in movies, TV shows, commercials…pretty much all facets of pop culture. Get into if you haven’t already.👇🏾
What We’re Watching
The Killer on Peacock
If you’re into explosions, wild chases and fight scenes, then this should be right up your alley. This is a remake of the 1989 film written and directed by John Woo, but this one stars Nathalie Emmanuel and Omar Sy. This updated version of The Killer is also directed by John Woo.
The kinetic action thriller follows Zee (Nathalie Emmanuel), a mysterious and infamous assassin known, and feared, in the Parisian underworld as the Queen of the Dead. But when, during an assignment from her shadowy mentor and handler, Zee refuses to kill a blinded young woman in a Paris nightclub, the decision will disintegrate Zee's alliances, attract the attention of a savvy police investigator and plunge her into a sinister criminal conspiracy that will set her on a collision course with her own past.
If you enjoyed the original movie, you’ll probably enjoy this as well. Check out the trailer below, and for those of you who have watched it, let us know what you thought about it in the comments.
