What We’re Watching
Metro Boomin - Red Bull Symphonic on YouTube
Anytime hip hop can be found in places that it historically wouldn’t be, it will always get a look from me. I saw a clip of this on the bird X, and had to track down the rest of it.
For one night only, world famous producer Metro Boomin teamed up with Red Bull and Maestro Anthony Parnther to bring the West Coast premiere of Red Bull Symphonic to the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Fusing the worlds of hip-hop and classical music in unprecedented fashion, the sold-out musical event included special performances by John Legend, Swae Lee, NAV and Roisee.
There’s not too much to look at after the the first couple of minutes, because it’s an orchestra, how exciting could it get? But this is something that you could put on to play in the background while you’re working or doing something around the house.
Get into it.

What We’re Listening To
KAYTRAMINÉ by KAYTRAMINÉ ( Kaytranada & Aminé)
This album came out last spring, but just ended up on our radar last week. It’s a collaboration album by DJ/producer Kaytranada, rapper Aminé, and features Snoop Dogg, Freddie Gibbs, Amaarae, Big Sean & Pharrell Williams. I knew that Kaytranada’s production would be solid, but I was familiar with Aminé by name only until this. Not knowing his previous work actually worked out because I had no expectations, but was impressed with how he held his own around all of these big names. The songs are all 3 minutes or less, so it’s a quick listen, and if you’re in a city that actually cold in the winter, then this might help you feel like it’s June.
You Down Wit’ O.P.P.? (Other Peoples Podcasts)
What Had Happened Was by Open Mike Eagle & Questlove
Rapper Open Mike Eagle has been hosting What Had Happened Was for a couple of years now, and he’d done season-long interviews with Prince Paul, Dante Ross and El-P before this, but this season might be my favorite.
Season 4 of What Had Happened Was features host Open Mike Eagle in conversation with legendary drummer, band leader and Oscar winner Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson. Throughout the course of the season, Questlove shares the stories behind the first four albums of the Legendary Roots Crew. Along the way, we hear Questlove’s personal rise alongside legends like Black Thought, Dilla, D’angelo, Jill Scott and many more.
Questlove gets into a lot of never heard before stories like this one about the making of “In Your Dreams Kid,” or this one about his and Black Thought’s original stage names. If you’re a fan of The Roots, this is a great listen.
