What We’re Up To
Hey, hey, hey, hope all is well on your side of the inbox. Hopefully you’ve pulled your winter gear out of storage because it’s getting cold, y’all. Things are good over here on our side. We just dropped a new episode over the weekend, talking about one of the greatest albums of all time, My Life by Mary J. Blige. We couldn’t let the 30th (Yes, 30!) anniversary pass and not get into it. Check it out👇🏾
What We’re Watching
Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary on HBO Max
The term “Yacht Rock” tends to rub the musicians that get put under this umbrella the wrong way, kinda like late ‘90s and early 2000s R&B artists hate the term “Neo-Soul.” But when you get down to it, the actual music is pretty amazing. If you grew up with someone in your life playing The Doobie Brothers or Al Jarreau, or sometimes find yourself in the checkout line at the grocery store singing "When you get caught between the moon and New York City," then this is the doc for you. It’s full of interviews with the OG’s like Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins as well as those who grew up listening to them but flipped it into some hip hop like Prince Paul, Thundercat & Questlove.

What We’re Reading
Denzel Washington gets really candid in this month’s Esquire, discussing his life and career as he approaches his 70th birthday.
How D.C. rapper Noochie, built his online performance series into one of the hottest destinations in music.
Katt Williams talks about "opening the portal" with GQ.
Andscape takes a look at Shaboozey being shut out at this years’ CMAs, despite the year that he’s had.
What We’re Listening To
GNX by Kendrick Lamar
The tiny terror from Compton dropped a surprise album last week, and it’s been in rotation around these parts since. As someone born and raised in Los Angeles, GNX really speaks to my west coast sensibilities. From the samples and production, to all of the local references, this is what I’m into. Although I doubt that it will, I hope that this jump starts a trend of rappers and producers getting back into regional sounds vs. the majority of mainstream music sounding like it comes from the same place.

You Down Wit’ O.P.P.? (Other Peoples Podcasts)
Blame It on The Fame by Wondery
We watched the Milli Vanilli documentary on Paramount+ last year, and it was really good, so when I saw this while looking for something to listen to on a recent flight, I decided to get into it. While it does go over some familiar details that a lot of us are already aware of, this podcast went a little deeper than the documentary in a lot of ways.

Random Internet Shenanigans
LL made a lot of people mad when he said this, and those who didn’t laugh, feel that he isn’t qualified to say this. Guess what? Those people are wrong. If anybody has the right to make these claims, it’s this man.
