What We’re Up To
Hey Y’all. We’re back in your inboxes with this month’s goodies. We know that it’s been a few weeks since our last episode, but we’re just trying to squeeze in a couple of trips and enjoy the end of summer.
With that said, we did drop part 2 of our #HipHop50 conversation about the growth of the hip hop genre over the past 50 years. This one focused on the ‘90s through present day. Check it out if you haven’t already! Click here if you prefer to listen somewhere other than Spotify.
What We’re Watching
Drop The Needle on Amazon Prime
Drop The Needle is about a local record store here in Toronto called Play De Record. This doc tells the story of how a small, mom and pop shop became the epicenter of urban Canadian music. If you’re curious about how the music scene in Canada became what it is, get into this.
What We’re Reading
Kevin Powell writes about the changes in both America and Hip Hop over the past 50 years.
Andscape interview with Bethann Hardison discussing Invisible Beauty, a documentary about her life and career.
After 27 years, an arrest has finally been made in the murder of Tupac Shakur.
Mariah Carey has announced two Christmas shows.
What We’re Listening To
The Love Album: Off The Grid by Diddy
The bird app says that this is the best R&B album of 2023. I can’t agree with that sentiment. I won’t say that it’s a bad album, because that would be a lie. It just isn’t what I’m looking for in an album made by the man who helped craft “What’s The 411?,” “Forever My Lady” & “Faith.”
As with every solo album he’s ever made, you listen to a Puff Daddy P.Diddy Diddy album to hear everyone else. He’s just kinda there. The standouts are the one posted below, “Moments” by Justin Bieber and “Closer To God” by Teyana Taylor.

Think Twice: Michael Jackson by Jay Smooth and Leon Neyfayk
This isn’t a story that dives into whether or not Michael is guilty of the allegations he faced in his later years. This podcast discusses his life and work, as well as the allegations, but they aren’t trying to sway your opinion in any direction. It’s a well done look into the complicated legacy of the greatest entertainer of all time.
More than a decade since Michael Jackson’s death, his legacy remains complicated and unresolved. Think Twice: Michael Jackson is an exploration of the King of Pop’s life and impact – and an investigation into why his global influence continues to endure, despite the disturbing allegations against him. In this ten-part series, journalists Leon Neyfakh and Jay Smooth bring you a new perspective on the Michael Jackson story, based on dozens of original interviews with people who watched it unfold from up close.

Random Internet Shenanigans
It was announced that Usher will be performing at halftime of the Super Bowl in February. A series of videos were released with footage of random celebs like Kim Kardashian, Deion Sanders and even current day Usher speaking to 2004 Usher from the “Confessions, pt. 2” video. Hands down, the best one is this one with Marshawn Lynch. Please, Hollywood producers and directors, cast Beast Mode in everything.
