What We’re Watching
Behind The Music: Bell Biv DeVoe on Paramount+
This episode of Behind The Music fills in some of the gaps that didn’t really get touched on in the New Edition biopic on BET in 2017. This time we get to see more of the relationship dynamic between Ronnie, Ricky and Mike. We’ve known about the ups and downs of NE, but I had no idea about the issues among the members of BBD. This episode does a really good job of tying the two stories together.
Watch it on Paramount+.
Ghostface Killah and Big Daddy Kane sat down to interview each other in this video from HipHopWired.
What We’re Reading
Shonda Rhimes discusses her future at Netflix.
Andscape profile on tennis coach Phil Gordon.
For those that need a primer on the Drake-Kendrick Lamar beef, GQ has a timeline of their issues.
Coco Jones interview with Elle magazine.
What We’re Listening To
Blue Funk by Heavy D & The Boyz
This is by far the most polarizing album in the Heavy D discography, but it is my favorite. While I can understand why a lot of fans didn’t really get with this, as it lacks a lot of the uptempo, danceable songs that he was known for up to that point, but it is one of the best produced albums of that era.
In 1993, urban music had started to transition away from the new jack swing sound and into something with a little more edge to it. If you have access to DJ Premier, Jesse West, Tony Dofat and Pete Rock is your cousin, why not make a boom bap album. Most people dismissed this as Heavy D trying to be “hard” or “gangsta,” when in reality, it was just a lot more introspective, since he was still dealing with the deaths of both his older brother and his best friend, Trouble T-Roy.
If you haven’t heard this in a while, give it a spin.

The Vault: Classic Music Reviews by IV Creative
We did another episode with B. Cox on The Vault a couple weeks back discussing the 30th anniversary of Illmatic. We got into all of our favorite songs and moments from the album and era, and Miguel even managed connect it to the “Malice at the Palace.” Check out the episode here:
And if you’re not familiar with B. Cox, or the show, here’s a quick intro:
The Vault: Classic Music Reviews Podcast is a show hosted by 'Xennial' music fans that grew up during hip-hop's golden era of 1990s and the boom of the early 2000s. We review classic hip-hop, R&B and reggae albums 20, 25 and 30 years after their release to give our reflections and to see if they still stand the test of time. It's a personal perspective on classics from a fresh point of view.
