3rd month, 3rd day and we’re rolling into your inboxes like Vin Rock from Naughty By Nature. Who knew Uncle Vinnie was so graceful?
Speaking of, have you caught our most recent episodes?
What We’re Up To
We dropped two episodes in February. The first one was with the homies over at Queue Points, Jay Ray and DJ Sir Daniel. It was the first of our #HipHop50 themed discussions. With this being the 50th anniversary of hip hop, we’re going to be doing a few of these episodes throughout the year.
We also dropped our Naughty By Nature episode last week. You can listen to it above and click here to check out more episodes on your podcast service of choice!
What We’re Watching
Snowfall Season 6 on FX
We’re 3 episodes into the final season of Snowfall, and without giving away too much, it isn’t looking good for any of the characters. Things have always been a little shaky with Franklin and his crew, even with the success that they’ve had over the years, but it’s never been this messy.
Although there have been some moments that have caused some of us to suspend disbelief, like the episode with the tiger, the show has given us a pretty accurate representation of Los Angeles in the mid-to-late 80s. With that in mind, this story could only go so far, and we’re heading toward that ending at an accelerated pace. A lot has been squeezed into the episodes that have aired so far, we’re excited to see how this all plays out.
More on Snowfall down there…👇🏾
What We’re Reading
After headlining the Super Bowl halftime show and prepping for another performance at this years Academy Awards, it seems that Rihanna is back…or is she?
A few articles from Gothamist, the NY Times, the LA Times, Andscape and Okayplayer about the life and legacy of a hip hop legend, Trugoy The Dove from De La Soul, who passed away a few weeks back just as their catalog is set to hit streaming services for the first time.
Elliott Wilson interviewed Nas before his sold out performance at Madison Square Garden last week.
Do you like crossword puzzles? This is fun.
What We’re Listening To
The Mind Of A Saint by Skyzoo
As a fan of Snowfall, I had to get into this album. I’d heard about it early last month before the new episodes started, and the concept drew me in immediately. It’s a concept album by Skyzoo, written and performed from the perspective of Franklin Saint. If you’re not caught up with the series, this album contains a lot of spoilers, so keep that in mind before listening.
I was really impressed with the way Skyzoo committed to the concept and never broke character throughout, it never feels like you’re listening to Skyzoo, just Franklin.
Suggested tracks: Eminent Domain, 100 to One, Apologies In Order
We talked about this in our January newsletter, and mentioned it earlier in this newsletter as well, the time has arrived. The De La Soul catalog is finally available to stream today, but it comes just weeks after the passing of Trugoy The Dove aka Plug 2. The group fought for years to gain control of their music and now that they have it, Dave isn’t here to take part in this new era of De La Soul, which sucks. For those of you who are of a certain age, I’m sure you’ll be adding these albums to your rotation again, keeping his memory alive. RIP Dave.
